Overview
ABB E-mobility (legal entity: ABB E-mobility Holding AG) is a Zurich, Switzerland-headquartered electric-vehicle charging infrastructure business, carved out as a standalone legal entity within the ABB Ltd group in 2022 ahead of a planned initial public offering. The business designs and sells DC fast chargers and depot, transit, and en-route charging systems for passenger vehicles, buses, trucks, and commercial fleets, and reports roughly 1,400 employees operating across facilities in North America, Europe, and Asia.
ABB first signaled plans to explore a public listing of the E-mobility business in mid-2021, at a target valuation reported near $3 billion, but delayed the IPO in June 2022 citing 'challenging' market conditions. In place of a public listing, the business instead raised outside capital through two pre-IPO private placement rounds: approximately CHF200 million in November 2022, followed by an additional CHF325 million from four investors in February 2023, including Porsche and Singapore's sovereign wealth fund GIC. Those rounds gave outside investors direct minority equity stakes in ABB E-mobility Holding AG itself -- a separate cap table from ABB Ltd's own SIX/NYSE-listed shares -- while ABB Ltd retained majority control of the business.
Leadership has evolved alongside the ownership changes: Michael Halbherr was appointed Chairman of ABB E-mobility in February 2022, and Frank Mühlon, who had led the business as CEO through its carve-out and initial fundraising, departed the role in March 2023 following an AGM at which shareholders approved a strategic and leadership transition. As of this research date, ABB E-mobility's own investor-facing materials list Michael Halbherr as CEO and Peter Molengraaf as Board Chairman. The business has continued to expand its charging product line into 2026, while also divesting some non-core minority positions, including a January 2025 transaction in which InCharge Energy bought back majority control of itself from ABB E-mobility, with ABB E-mobility retaining a significant minority stake and a multi-year licensing and service partnership with InCharge.
