About

Airwallex was founded in Melbourne, Australia in 2015 by Jack Zhang, Lucy Liu, Max Li, Xijing (Jacob) Dai and Ki-lok Wong, after the founders experienced the cost and friction of moving money across borders for a coffee-import business. The company built out a proprietary global payments and banking infrastructure layer, expanding from cross-border payments into business accounts, card issuing, spend management, payment acceptance and embedded finance products delivered through APIs and web applications.

Overview

Airwallex is a global financial platform founded in Melbourne, Australia in 2015 by Jack Zhang, Lucy Liu, Max Li, Xijing (Jacob) Dai and Ki-lok Wong. The company provides businesses with cross-border payments, multi-currency business accounts, spend management and expense cards, payment acceptance, and billing infrastructure delivered through APIs and web applications, operating in more than 200 countries and regions.

Airwallex has raised over $1.5 billion in disclosed equity funding since 2015. Its valuation rose from over $1 billion after a March 2019 Series C round, to $4 billion after a September 2021 Series E round, to $5.5 billion after an October 2022 Series E extension, to $6.2 billion after a May 2025 Series F round, to $8 billion after a December 2025 Series G round led by Addition, and most recently to $11 billion after a $320 million Series H round led by Addition in June 2026. Annualized revenue reached $1.3 billion in March 2026, up 74% year-over-year, and annualized transaction volume reached $287 billion, more than doubling year-over-year.

In late 2025, Airwallex established San Francisco as a second global headquarters alongside its existing Singapore base, committing more than $1 billion to U.S. expansion between 2026 and 2029. Jack Zhang remains Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer and Lucy Liu remains President and Co-Founder. As of September 2026 Airwallex has not filed an S-1 registration statement with the SEC; Liu told Fortune in August 2026 that the company aims to be "IPO-ready" by the end of the year but that it is "just not the best time, given how complicated things are."
