Overview
Alation is a Redwood City, California-based enterprise software company founded in 2012 by Satyen Sangani, Aaron Kalb, Feng Niu, and Venky Ganti. The company built one of the first modern data catalogs, using natural language processing to help business users find, understand, and trust enterprise data, and has since expanded into a broader data intelligence and AI governance platform.
The company's product has evolved from its original data catalog into what Alation now calls its Intelligence Operating System (AIOS), launched in July 2026, which is intended to unify data, context, and AI agents so that enterprise AI systems act on governed, trustworthy information rather than stale or misinterpreted data. Alation has been named a Leader in Gartner Magic Quadrant and IDC MarketScape evaluations of the data intelligence and data catalog market multiple times.
Alation has raised more than $300 million in venture funding across rounds including a 2015 Series A, a 2021 Series D, and a 2022 Series E that valued the company at $1.7 billion, from investors such as Thoma Bravo, Riverwood Capital, Sanabil Investments, Costanoa Ventures, Snowflake Ventures, Dell Technologies Capital, and Salesforce Ventures. In May 2025, Alation acquired AI data-agent startup Numbers Station to accelerate its AI agent capabilities. As of that acquisition, Alation reported more than 600 enterprise customers, including Nasdaq, Hertz, and Samsung, and remains a privately held company with no SEC filings on record.
Private securities are speculative, illiquid, and involve risk of complete loss of principal. You should be prepared to hold private securities for an extended period; there is no assurance of a secondary market, an IPO, or other liquidity event. You are fully responsible for conducting your own due diligence. Pricing is indicative — nothing here is an offer of securities.
