Overview

Algolia is a search-technology company that provides an API-based, AI-powered search and discovery platform used by developers and digital teams to add fast, relevant search and recommendations to websites and apps. The company was founded in 2012 in Paris, France by Nicolas Dessaigne and Julien Lemoine, and later relocated its corporate headquarters to the United States; Algolia's website currently lists Palo Alto, California as its headquarters, while earlier public records described the company as headquartered in San Francisco.

Algolia went through Y Combinator's Winter 2014 batch as it built out its hosted search infrastructure, and grew its global data-center footprint significantly in the years that followed. The company has made at least two acquisitions to extend its platform: MorphL, a Romanian AI/machine-learning startup, in January 2021, adding customer-behavior prediction and personalization capabilities; and Search.io, a vector-search vendor, in September 2022, combining keyword-based and vector-based (semantic) search under one platform.

Today Algolia describes itself as an AI search and retrieval platform used by more than 18,000 brands and over 500,000 developers worldwide, running across more than 70 data centers in roughly 17 global regions. The company reached unicorn status in mid-2021 after a $150 million Series D round valued it at $2.25 billion.
