Overview

Back Market is a Paris-founded technology company, established in 2014 by Thibaud Hug de Larauze, Quentin Le Brouster and Vianney Vaute, that connects consumers with independent, professionally certified refurbishers of smartphones, laptops, tablets and other consumer electronics. Its stated mission is to make refurbished devices the mainstream choice, extending device lifespans and fighting electronic waste; the company is B Corp-certified and says it has helped avoid more than 2 million metric tons of CO2-equivalent emissions to date.

The company raised more than $1 billion across five venture rounds, most recently a $510 million Series E in January 2022 led by Sprints Capital that valued it at $5.7 billion. Independent estimates put its valuation at roughly $5.5 billion (about €5.1 billion) as of September 2025, down from the 2022 peak amid a broader private-market repricing rather than any deterioration in the underlying business. Back Market says it reached EBITDA break-even in Europe in 2024 and globally in 2025, with gross merchandise value of about $3.5 billion in 2025 (up 32% year over year) across roughly 18 million customers in 17 markets, and its CEO has said no new funding round is planned in the near term.

On September 1, 2026, Clément Petit - CFO since 2020, who helped guide the company to profitability - became CEO, the company's first CEO change since its founding. Founder Thibaud Hug de Larauze moved into a newly created Executive Chairman role to focus on long-term strategy and industry-wide transformation.
