Overview

Backbase is a Dutch software company that builds what it calls an AI-native banking operating system -- a platform layer that sits on top of banks' legacy core systems and lets financial institutions unify digital onboarding, customer engagement, and internal operations across channels.

Founded in 2003 in Amsterdam, the company originally built a general-purpose Ajax web-development framework before refocusing exclusively on financial-services software in 2013. Backbase says more than 150 banks and credit unions run on its platform, and the company employs 2,000+ people across 16 offices on five continents.

Backbase has remained privately held throughout its history, funded primarily by its founders and retained earnings until accepting its first disclosed outside growth-equity investment from Motive Partners in 2022.
