Overview
Base Power was incorporated in June 2023 and launched commercial operations in Austin, Texas in May 2024. Co-founder and CEO Zach Dell previously worked in energy investing at Blackstone and at Thrive Capital; co-founder and COO Justin Lopas previously worked on the Falcon 9 and Starship programs at SpaceX and in manufacturing at Anduril Industries.
The company operates a vertically integrated model spanning battery design, manufacturing, home installation, grid services and retail electricity sales. Customers receive a 25-to-50-kilowatt-hour (and, with the newer Base Core unit, up to 39.2-kilowatt-hour) home battery for a small upfront fee and a monthly subscription, well below the list price of a comparable single home battery from competitors, with a multi-year service commitment.
Base's batteries are charged when grid electricity is cheap and discharged to power the home during outages or high-demand periods, with the aggregated fleet participating in ERCOT's Aggregate Distributed Energy Resource programs and providing grid services for compensation. The company holds a retail electric provider license in Texas (Base Texas REP, LLC, PUCT License #10338).
Base has expanded beyond Austin to Houston and Dallas-Fort Worth in Texas and, in 2026, into the Chicago area of Illinois -- its first market outside Texas. It opened a battery manufacturing facility in the Austin area in 2026, targeting production of roughly 4,000 units per week by year-end to support continued national expansion.
