Overview
Beijing WeLion New Energy Technology is a private Chinese battery manufacturer founded on August 11, 2016 by Chen Liquan (a professor at the Chinese Academy of Engineering), Li Hong (a researcher at the Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences), and senior engineer Yu Huigen. The company develops semi-solid-state and solid-state lithium battery cells and is headquartered in the Fangshan District of Beijing.
WeLion is best known as the battery supplier behind Nio's 150 kWh semi-solid-state battery pack, and it began delivering 360 Wh/kg battery cells to Nio on June 30, 2023 at a ceremony in Huzhou, Zhejiang province — described by the company's chairman as the result of more than two years of joint development work with Nio. The pack gives Nio's ES6 a rated range of up to 930 km and was initially offered only through a battery-rental model.
The company has continued to push battery energy density in the lab, and in December 2025 its chairman said WeLion's solid-state cells had reached 824 Wh/kg in laboratory testing, with a target above 1,000 Wh/kg, while citing the cost of raw materials as the main obstacle to mass production. That same month, WeLion began a formal pre-IPO tutoring process with a securities firm as it works toward a potential listing on China's ChiNext growth market; as of the tutoring announcement the company remained a private, unlisted entity.
Private securities are speculative, illiquid, and involve risk of complete loss of principal. You should be prepared to hold private securities for an extended period; there is no assurance of a secondary market, an IPO, or other liquidity event. You are fully responsible for conducting your own due diligence. Pricing is indicative — nothing here is an offer of securities.
