Overview

Benchling is a cloud-based software platform for biotechnology research and development, providing scientists with tools for experiment design, electronic lab notebooks, molecular biology, and data management across the drug-discovery and development lifecycle. Founded in 2012 by MIT graduates Sajith Wickramasekara and Ashu Singhal, the company is headquartered in San Francisco. Benchling raised a $200 million Series E in April 2021 at a $4 billion valuation, followed by a $100 million Series F in November 2021 co-led by Franklin Templeton and Altimeter Capital at a $6.1 billion valuation — its most recent disclosed priced round as of this writing. The company has continued to expand its product line through acquisitions, including antibody-discovery software maker PipeBio in October 2024, and AI-focused startups ReSync Bio and Sphinx Bio in August 2025 to build out its AI roadmap for drug discovery. In October 2025, Benchling announced a partnership with Anthropic to bring Claude's AI capabilities into its platform via the Model Context Protocol. Benchling remains privately held with no announced IPO date.
