BGL Group

BGL Group is a privately held financial services group headquartered in Peterborough, England, best known as the parent company of the price comparison website Compare the Market. The current corporate entity, BGL Group Limited, was originally incorporated in March 1991 under the name Tele-Cover Holdings Limited, was renamed Budget Group Limited in 1997, and took its current name, BGL Group Limited, in 2007.

The group's flagship consumer brand, Compare the Market, launched in early 2006 after Budget Group sold its high-street insurance retail business to Swinton Insurance and moved toward an online distribution model. Compare the Market went on to become one of the UK's 'Big Four' price comparison sites, letting consumers compare car, home, van, life, pet, travel and over-50s insurance as well as energy, broadband, loans, credit cards, current accounts and mortgages, and it operates an Australian arm launched in 2012.

BGL Group Limited is a privately owned company: UK Companies House records show that BGL (Holdings) Limited, a private English company registered at the same Peterborough address, holds 75% or more of both the shares and voting rights in BGL Group Limited. This structure was corroborated by a 2022 Competition Appeal Tribunal judgment in which the appellant was named as 'BGL (Holdings) Limited & Others, trading as Compare The Market' — confirming BGL Group has no independently listed public equity of its own and is not a subsidiary of an already-public parent.
