Founded in August 2024 by Robin Rombach, Andreas Blattmann, Patrick Esser and Dominik Lorenz — the researchers who created latent diffusion and the original Stable Diffusion models before leaving Stability AI — the company's flagship FLUX family of image-generation and editing models is used by enterprises including Adobe, Canva, Meta, Shutterstock and Samsung, delivered through an open-weights core plus commercial API and licensing tiers.
The company launched with FLUX.1 in August 2024 alongside a $31 million seed round led by Andreessen Horowitz, and has since released successive model generations — FLUX.1.1 Pro, FLUX.1 Tools, FLUX.1 Kontext, and the FLUX.2 family unveiled in November 2025 — expanding from pure image generation into consistent-character editing and higher-fidelity, production-grade visual pipelines. In December 2025, Black Forest Labs closed a $300 million Series B co-led by Anjney Midha's AMP and Salesforce Ventures at a $3.25 billion post-money valuation, bringing its total disclosed funding above $450 million.
