Overview

Blockstream is a Bitcoin infrastructure company founded in 2014 by cryptographer Adam Back alongside Bitcoin Core contributors including Pieter Wuille, Gregory Maxwell, Erik Svenson, and others. The company builds Bitcoin-focused technology across several product lines: the Liquid Network, a federated Bitcoin sidechain for faster and confidential asset settlement; self-custody hardware and software including the Blockstream Jade hardware wallet and Blockstream App; enterprise custody and treasury tools under Blockstream Enterprise; and Core Lightning, an implementation of the Lightning Network protocol. Blockstream's Bitcoin mining fleet/hosting business and the Blockstream Satellite service, which broadcasts the Bitcoin blockchain globally, were spun out into the independent company Blockstream Mining in 2025; its ASIC chip-design division was separately spun out into its own independent company. Neither is part of core Blockstream's operations today.

Blockstream has raised more than $600 million in disclosed private financing since 2014, most recently a $210 million convertible note round led by Fulgur Ventures in October 2024 to fund layer-2 development, mining expansion, and growth of its corporate Bitcoin treasury. The company operates from a global, largely remote team with hubs including the Cayman Islands, the San Francisco Bay Area, Montreal, Victoria, Lugano, Milan, and Tokyo.
