Overview

Cohesity is a privately held enterprise software company that develops a unified platform for backing up, securing, managing, and gaining insight from data spread across data centers, edge locations, and public clouds. The company was founded in June 2013 by Mohit Aron, who had previously co-founded the hyperconverged infrastructure company Nutanix, and is headquartered in Santa Clara, California, with additional offices in India and Ireland.

Cohesity's platform, marketed as the Cohesity Data Cloud, spans data protection (backup and recovery across more than 1,000 hybrid-cloud and SaaS workloads), data security (including ransomware detection and cyber recovery tools such as its FortKnox air-gapped vault), and data insights. The company says its software protects more than 200 exabytes of data for over 12,000 customers globally, including a large share of the Global 500.

In February 2024, Cohesity announced an agreement to acquire the data protection business of Veritas Technologies, including the NetBackup product line, from owner The Carlyle Group in a transaction that valued the acquired business at $3 billion; the deal closed in December 2024. Cohesity's founder, Mohit Aron, stepped back from the CEO role in August 2022, handing the position to Sanjay Poonen, a former VMware and SAP executive, who has led the company through its subsequent growth and the Veritas integration.
