Overview

CuspAI is a Cambridge, UK-based startup building generative AI tools for materials discovery. Rather than the traditional cycle of synthesizing candidate materials and then testing them, CuspAI's platform inverts the process: a user specifies the properties a material needs to have, and the AI generates and screens molecular and crystal structures that could meet those criteria, aiming to compress years of laboratory research into a much shorter cycle.

The company was co-founded in 2024 by Chad Edwards, a chemist with prior deep-tech commercialization experience at Google, BASF, and quantum computing company Quantinuum, and Max Welling, an AI researcher and former Distinguished Scientist and VP at Microsoft Research and Qualcomm who previously held a professorship at the University of Amsterdam. Geoffrey Hinton serves as a board adviser to the company.

CuspAI's early application focus has included carbon capture, with the company describing work on 'molecular sponges' designed to selectively absorb carbon dioxide from the air, and it has partnered with Meta's Fundamental AI Research team on materials-discovery research. The company has since organized an 'AI Materials Foundry,' an ecosystem bringing together industrial partners, research labs, and data providers around AI-driven materials R&D.
