Overview

David is a New York City-based food brand built around high-protein, low-calorie products, founded by Peter Rahal — who previously co-founded RXBAR and sold it to Kellogg for $600 million in 2017 — alongside co-founder Zach Ranen, a founder of the online bakery Raize. The pair began developing David's formulation in October 2022, naming the brand after Michelangelo's marble sculpture of David.

The company's debut product, a protein bar delivering 28 grams of protein for 150 calories and zero grams of sugar, launched in September 2024. David has since expanded its lineup to include a lower-calorie 'Bronze' bar, ready-to-drink protein milkshakes, canned wild-caught Atlantic cod, and a frozen high-protein dessert introduced in June 2026. The brand rapidly scaled distribution to more than 3,000 U.S. retail locations within its first several months, including a distribution deal with Wegmans, and says it has collected more than 19,000 positive customer reviews.

In May 2025, David raised a $75 million Series A round led by Greenoaks with participation from Valor Equity Partners, following an earlier $10 million seed round, bringing total funding to $85 million. As part of the same period, David acquired Epogee, the sole manufacturer of the esterified propoxylated glycerol (EPG) fat substitute used in several of its products, giving the company exclusive control over that ingredient.
