Overview
Deel is a payroll and human resources platform built for companies that employ people in more than one country. It combines an employer-of-record service, contractor management, local and global payroll, an HRIS, benefits administration, immigration support and IT device management in a single system, and runs payroll in more than 150 countries on infrastructure the company owns and operates rather than reselling from local partners.
The company was founded in 2019 by Alex Bouaziz and Shuo Wang, who met while studying at MIT, and went through Y Combinator. Its first product let a company in one country hire and legally pay a worker in another without opening a local entity; the platform has since expanded so that a single customer can run domestic US payroll, foreign entity payroll, contractor payments and employer-of-record hiring side by side.
Growth has come from a mix of product expansion and acquisition. Deel has completed roughly fifteen acquisitions, including PayGroup, PaySpace, Hofy, Zavvy, Capbase, Legalpad, Safeguard Global's payroll division, the SaaS procurement platform Sastrify in April 2026 and the identity and deepfake-detection company Clarity in August 2026. The pattern is consistent: buy a capability in an adjacent part of the employment lifecycle, then fold it into the core platform as another module customers can attach.
By the company's own account it passed $1 billion of annual recurring revenue in 2025, recorded its first $100 million revenue month in September 2025, and surpassed $1.5 billion of ARR during the first half of 2026. It says it has been profitable for three consecutive years, processes about $22 billion of payroll a year, and serves more than 40,000 businesses covering roughly 1.5 million workers.
The main complications for an investor are competitive and legal rather than financial. Deel competes directly with Rippling, Remote, Papaya Global and the incumbent payroll providers, and it has been in litigation with Rippling since March 2025 over allegations of corporate espionage, with counterclaims filed by Deel and the case still in discovery in 2026. Management has said publicly that it is building the audit and compliance infrastructure required for a listing, but no registration statement appears on EDGAR.
