Overview
Discord is a voice, video and text communication platform originally built for gamers that has grown into a broader hub for online communities. Jason Citron founded the company (initially as Hammer & Chisel) around 2012, and he and Stanislav Vishnevskiy released the first version of the Discord app in May 2015 as a gaming-focused chat app for desktop and mobile. The company is headquartered at 444 De Haro Street, Suite 200, San Francisco, California, with a European office in Schiphol, Netherlands.
In April 2021, Discord turned down an acquisition offer from Microsoft reported at roughly $10 billion, opting to remain independent while it explored options including a possible public listing. In September 2021 the company raised a $500 million round led by Dragoneer Investment Group that valued it at about $15 billion.
In April 2025, Jason Citron stepped down as CEO, moving to the board as an advisor, and Humam Sakhnini became CEO; Stanislav Vishnevskiy remains a co-founder and CTO. In March 2025, the New York Times reported Discord was in early-stage talks about a potential IPO, though the company has consistently declined to comment on the speculation and, as of this writing, has not filed to go public. Discord reports more than 200 million monthly users and around 90 million daily active users as of late 2025.
Private securities are speculative, illiquid, and involve risk of complete loss of principal. You should be prepared to hold private securities for an extended period; there is no assurance of a secondary market, an IPO, or other liquidity event. You are fully responsible for conducting your own due diligence. Pricing is indicative — nothing here is an offer of securities.
