Overview
Employment Hero is an Australian HR technology company founded in 2014 by Ben Thompson, an employment lawyer, and Dave Tong. The company describes its mission as "making employment easier and more valuable, for everyone," and has built what it calls an AI-powered Employment Operating System spanning HR and compliance software, payroll and rostering, benefits and perks, and AI-driven recruitment tools for small and medium-sized businesses. It was founded by Ben Thompson, Dave Tong.
Beyond its core self-managed software, Employment Hero offers HeroForce, a managed employer-of-record service for hiring and employing talent internationally, and has expanded its AI product line with an AI Recruitment Agent that screens and ranks candidates, an AI HR Agent that answers employee HR questions, and an AI Payroll Agent that processes payroll and flags anomalies. The company operates across Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Canada, Singapore and Malaysia.
Employment Hero has grown through both product expansion and acquisition, including its acquisition of Toronto-based HR and payroll platform Humi in January 2025 as part of its push into the Canadian market. Per Sacra's research, the company reports serving 300,000+ to 350,000+ businesses (figures vary slightly between the company's own site and third-party research) and manages payroll for roughly 2.5 million employees, processing more than A$100 billion in wages annually through its platform. Per Sacra (a third-party research firm), 2025 annual recurring revenue was reported as 163 million dollars, though this could not be independently confirmed via a raw HTML fetch (sacra.com renders client-side). Per Sacra (a third-party research firm), lifetime funding raised (as of 2025) was reported as 1.05 billion dollars, though this could not be independently confirmed via a raw HTML fetch (sacra.com renders client-side).
