Enpal
Overview
Enpal is a Berlin-based clean-energy company that sells and, primarily, leases residential solar panel systems, battery storage, heat pumps, EV wallboxes, and smart meters to homeowners across Germany and, more recently, other European markets, bundling them into a subscription-style package rather than requiring customers to buy the equipment outright.
Founded in 2017 by Mario Kohle, Jochen Ziervogel, and Viktor Wingert, the company grew rapidly on the back of Germany's residential energy transition, becoming the country's first Greentech 'unicorn' after a SoftBank-backed round in 2021 pushed its valuation above $1 billion. It has since expanded into heat pump installation, smart metering (through its metrify subsidiary), and business/commercial solar through additional group entities.
By its own account, Enpal has equipped well over 100,000 households with solar systems and tens of thousands more with heat pumps and smart meters, and has grown to a workforce spread across sales, installation, and engineering roles. In 2026 the company restructured parts of its sales footprint, including closing its Hamburg office, while also striking new financing arrangements, including a majority-stake sale in some of its residential-system subsidiaries to a consortium of infrastructure investors, to fund continued platform growth.
