Overview
Epirus is a defense technology company that designs and manufactures high-power microwave (HPM) systems for counter-unmanned aerial systems (counter-UAS) and electronic warfare applications. Founded in 2018 through the 8VC Build program by Joe Lonsdale (8VC) and Grant Verstandig (Red Cell Partners), the company is headquartered in Torrance, California, with additional operations near Fort Sill/Lawton, Oklahoma.
The company's flagship product line, Leonidas, uses solid-state high-power microwave technology to disable drones and drone swarms at range, and has been adapted into maritime (H2O), expeditionary, and autonomous-vehicle-mounted configurations. Epirus has partnered with General Dynamics Land Systems, Kodiak AI, Digital Force Technologies, and Peraton, and has delivered systems and demonstrations to the U.S. Army, U.S. Marine Corps, and U.S. Navy, including a live-fire demonstration in which Leonidas was reported to have defeated a 49-drone swarm.
Epirus is led by CEO Andy Lowery, with an executive team including Mark Cuyler (COO), Reed Werner (CFO), Rubun Dey (Chief Strategy & Product Officer), Mike Hiatt (CTO), and Mark Horton (Chief People Officer). The company has raised over $550 million in cumulative venture funding across Series B, C, and D rounds from investors including 8VC, T. Rowe Price, Bedrock Capital, StepStone Group, and General Dynamics Land Systems, and was valued at $1.35 billion as of its February 2022 Series C round.
