Overview

Exa builds a search API designed for AI agents and applications rather than for human browsers. The company describes its mission as building "a perfect search engine unlike the world has ever seen," using a neural search architecture trained to predict relevant links directly rather than matching keywords, so that AI models can retrieve accurate, up-to-date information with fewer hallucinations than general-purpose web search.

The company was founded by Will Bryk (CEO) and Jeff Wang, who met as freshmen at Harvard and went through Y Combinator's Summer 2021 batch. Exa is based in San Francisco and opened its first Asia-Pacific engineering office in Singapore in March 2026.

Exa's products include a Search API, Contents API, Agent API, and Monitors API, offering what the company describes as a web-scale index spanning hundreds of billions of webpages. Customers cited on Exa's site and in its funding announcements include Cursor, Cognition, HubSpot, OpenRouter, monday.com, StackAI, Firefox, 11x, and CodeRabbit, and the company has said it serves several hundred thousand developers.
