Overview

Forto is a Berlin-based digital freight forwarder that helps businesses book, track, and manage international shipments across sea, air, rail, and road. The company was originally founded in 2016 under the name FreightHub before rebranding to Forto, and describes its mission as "building the backbone of global trade, to make shipping products as easy as sending emails."

The company's platform, marketed as "Ship by Forto," gives customers real-time shipment visibility, centralized document management, and communication tools for coordinating with suppliers, alongside sustainability features such as carbon-emissions tracking and biofuel options. Forto has more recently launched FortoLabs, a unit developing AI-powered SaaS tools for logistics operations, including document-processing products branded FlashDoc and LumoDoc.

Forto has raised outside venture funding across multiple rounds since its founding, including a 2020 growth round backed by investors such as Inven Capital, Northzone, Cherry Ventures, and ocean carrier Maersk, as well as later Series C and Series D rounds referenced in the company's own leadership announcements. In November 2025, co-founder Michael Wax stepped down as CEO after nine years leading the company and became Chairman of the Board, with CFO Guillaume Petit-Perrin -- who had joined Forto in 2021 from J.P. Morgan and helped lead the Series C and Series D raises -- succeeding him as CEO.
