Overview
Greenlight is an Atlanta-based fintech company that provides a debit card, banking app, and family-organization platform aimed at helping parents raise financially capable kids and teens. Founded in 2014 by Tim Sheehan and Johnson Cook, the company launched its first debit-card product in early 2017, giving parents store-level controls over where and how much their children could spend.
The Greenlight app has since expanded well beyond the original debit card to include automated allowance and chores tracking, a kids' investing account, interest-earning savings, a cash-back Mastercard credit card for parents, and Greenlight Family Shield, a suite of family-safety features such as location sharing, crash detection, and an SOS button. Its stated mission is to "shine a light on the world of money for families and empower parents to raise financially-smart kids."
By August 2024, CEO Tim Sheehan said Greenlight had raised roughly $556 million in venture capital, served about 6.5 million parent and child users through roughly 75 bank and corporate partnerships, and employed about 400 people, while describing the company as being in a comfortable financial position with no immediate fundraising planned.
