Overview
Hopper is a Montreal-based travel technology company, founded in 2007 by Frederic Lalonde and Joost Ouwerkerk (both former Expedia executives), that uses machine learning to predict flight and hotel prices and lets travelers book directly or lock in a future price through fintech products such as Price Freeze and Flight Disruption Guarantee. The company grew into a consumer travel app and website alongside Hopper Technology Solutions (HTS), a business-to-business division that white-labels Hopper's travel and fintech technology to banks, airlines, and other partners, including a long-running partnership that built Capital One Travel.
Hopper raised more than $700 million in disclosed venture funding through 2022, reaching a peak valuation of roughly $5 billion, with backers including Capital One, GPI Capital, OMERS, WestCap, Goldman Sachs Growth, Citi Ventures, and Inovia Capital.
In March 2026, Capital One announced it would pay Hopper to bring in-house the technology, supplier relationships, and roughly 150 employees that had built and run Capital One Travel, a deal that closed in April 2026; Capital One remains a Hopper investor and a customer of Hopper's fintech products, but Hopper no longer operates the Capital One Travel platform itself and has since refocused around HTS, signing a new long-term deal in 2026 to power travel booking for Canada's Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) Avion Rewards program.
As of September 2026, Hopper remains privately held, with founder and CEO Frederic Lalonde having said in January 2025 that he is eyeing an eventual dual listing on the Toronto Stock Exchange and Nasdaq, conditioned on the company reaching or being on a clear path to more than $1 billion in trailing revenue while profitable, but no IPO date has been set.
