Overview

K2 Space is a Torrance, California-based aerospace manufacturer building what it calls "Mega Class" satellites — large, high-power spacecraft platforms designed to deliver far more power and payload capacity than typical constellation-class satellites. The company was founded in 2022 by brothers Karan Kunjur (CEO), a former AI startup founder and ex-Boston Consulting Group consultant, and Neel Kunjur (CTO), a former SpaceX avionics engineer who worked on the Dragon spacecraft before a stint at electric-aircraft company Kitty Hawk.

K2's central bet is that new heavy-lift and reusable launch vehicles — Falcon 9, Starship, and New Glenn — make it economical to fly much larger, more powerful satellites than the industry has historically built, unlocking performance in communications, national-security, and orbital-computing applications that smaller buses cannot support. The company builds roughly 85% of each satellite platform in-house at a 180,000-square-foot factory in Torrance designed for up to 100 satellites per year, and opened a second engineering office in the greater Seattle area in July 2026.

K2 launched its first Mega-Class satellite, GRAVITAS, on a SpaceX Falcon 9 as part of the Transporter-16 rideshare mission on March 30, 2026, testing a 20-kilowatt Hall-effect thruster, large deployable solar arrays, and 12 undisclosed customer payloads including modules for the U.S. Department of Defense; the mission was backed in part by a $60 million U.S. Space Force STRATFI award.

K2 has since signed a contract with SES to build 28 satellite platforms for SES's next-generation "meoSphere" medium-Earth-orbit network (announced March 2026), and serves as the satellite-bus provider within an Anduril Industries-led consortium developing prototype space-based interceptors for the U.S. Space Force's Golden Dome missile-defense program. K2 has raised more than $900 million in venture capital since its 2022 founding, most recently a $500 million Series D in July 2026 at a $6.8 billion post-money valuation, and says it has now signed over $1 billion in combined commercial and government contracts.
