Overview

Founded in 2018 by Kurt House, Josh Goldman, and other co-founders, KoBold Metals applies machine learning and large geoscience datasets to mineral exploration, an approach the company describes as building a data-driven map of the Earth's crust to find deposits of copper, cobalt, nickel, and lithium.

The company's flagship project is the Mingomba copper-cobalt deposit in Zambia's Copperbelt, which KoBold acquired an 80% stake in during late 2022 after earlier owners Anglo American and Equinox Minerals had passed on developing it. KoBold broke ground on the underground mine in April 2026, targeting a project cost of more than $2 billion and first copper output in the early 2030s.

KoBold Metals is backed by a group of investors that includes Bill Gates' Breakthrough Energy Ventures, Andreessen Horowitz, T. Rowe Price, Durable Capital Partners, Equinor, Mitsubishi, and BHP Ventures, among others, and has raised capital across multiple disclosed equity rounds since its 2019 Series A.
