Overview
Lightmatter is a Mountain View, California-based photonics company building silicon-photonic chips and optical interconnects designed to move data between AI processors faster and with less energy than conventional electrical links.
Founded in 2017 by MIT-connected researchers Nicholas Harris, Darius Bunandar, and Thomas Graham, the company built its early Series A and B rounds around photonic computing chips before its commercial focus shifted toward optical interconnect products for AI data centers, including its Passage line of co-packaged and near-packaged optics.
The company relocated its headquarters from the Boston area to Mountain View, California, a move reported in October 2024, while retaining an office and lab in Boston along with additional offices in Toronto and Hsinchu, Taiwan.
