Overview

Liquid AI is an artificial intelligence company spun out of the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) in 2023 to build general-purpose AI systems based on liquid neural networks, an architecture in which neuron behavior is governed by differential equations rather than fixed weights, inspired by the neurology of the roundworm C. elegans. The company was co-founded by CEO Ramin Hasani, CTO Mathias Lechner, Chief Science Officer Alexander Amini, and robotics researcher Daniela Rus.

The company positions its liquid neural network-based models as smaller and less computationally demanding than conventional transformer-based AI models, while remaining able to continue adapting after training. Liquid AI has a presence in both Boston and Palo Alto and describes its mission as building the fastest, most compute-efficient, and capable foundation models so intelligence can run on hardware outside of centralized data centers, including phones, laptops, and vehicles.

Liquid AI publicly released its first generation of Liquid Foundation Models (LFM-1B, LFM-3B, and LFM-40B) on September 30, 2024, followed by LFM-7B in January 2025 and the second-generation LFM2 family in mid-2025, with a newer LFM2.5 model family introduced in January 2026 spanning language, vision-language, and audio variants. The company offers free use of its models for commercial applications until a company reaches $10 million in annual revenue, a business model it contrasts with subscription-based approaches from larger AI labs.
