Overview
Mafengwo (马蜂窝, rebranded from 蚂蜂窝 in February 2018) is a Beijing-based Chinese travel content and booking platform operated by Beijing Mafengwo Network Technology Co., Ltd. Founded in 2006 by Chen Gang as a travel forum, it grew into a large user-generated-content travel software utility where members share travelogues, destination guides, and reviews, alongside hotel, flight, and visa booking tools covering mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and international destinations.
The company raised institutional venture capital across at least four rounds between 2013 and 2019 -- a $15M Series B in 2013 (Qiming Venture Partners, Capital Today), an undisclosed-amount Series C in 2015 (Hillhouse Capital, Qiming, Coatue), a $133M Series D in 2017 (General Atlantic, Temasek, Ocean Link), and a $250M round in 2019 led by Tencent with General Atlantic, Qiming, Yuantai Evergreen Investment Partners, NM Strategic Focus Fund and eGarden Ventures participating. Cumulative disclosed funding across the rounds with a stated amount totals at least $398M; the 2015 round's size was never publicly disclosed, so the true lifetime total is somewhat higher than the itemized figure.
In October 2018 Mafengwo was hit by a widely circulated allegation (via a WeChat post) that a large share of its user reviews were fake or scraped/plagiarized from rivals such as Dianping and Ctrip using bots; the company acknowledged some fraudulent content existed while disputing the specific scale claimed. Chinese-language coverage links the episode to a subsequent slowdown of the company's IPO ambitions and a later round of workforce downsizing, but the platform continued operating throughout and remains active. As of 2025-2026 the company has repositioned around AI: it integrated DeepSeek's model into its trip-planning tools, deployed an 'AI Xiao Ma' travel assistant that became the Singapore Tourism Board's first overseas destination AI partner (2024), and has run joint AI-travel initiatives with the Singapore Tourism Board and Latin American platform Despegar into 2026 -- indicating it remains an independent, operating going concern rather than a wound-down or absorbed entity.
