Misfits Market

Overview

Misfits Market was founded in 2018 by Abhi Ramesh in Philadelphia, after Ramesh witnessed a Pennsylvania farmer discarding misshapen apples that failed to meet retail cosmetic standards. The company built an online grocery delivery service around sourcing produce and other food that grocery stores reject for being too small, oddly shaped, or discolored, framing its mission around food access and affordability, particularly in food deserts.

The business grew quickly in its early years: by November 2021 the company had raised $200 million during the year, pushing its valuation to $2 billion, and opened a 200,000-square-foot distribution and customer service center in West Jordan, Utah, to serve the Western United States and parts of the Midwest. That facility initially hired more than 150 employees with plans to grow toward roughly 800 within five years.

Misfits Market has since pursued consolidation in the online grocery delivery space, announcing the acquisition of rival Imperfect Foods in 2022 and, in May 2025, acquiring The Rounds, a startup delivering household essentials in reusable packaging. As of the 2025 announcement, Misfits Market said it had rescued more than 238 million pounds of food from waste and had raised more than $525 million in total funding.
