Mistral AI

Mistral AI is a Paris-based developer of large language models, founded in April 2023 by Arthur Mensch, Guillaume Lample and Timothee Lacroix. Mensch was previously a research scientist at Google DeepMind; Lample led Meta's Llama work and Lacroix worked in Meta's Paris AI team. The three met as students at Ecole Polytechnique and incorporated the company roughly a month before raising Europe's largest seed round to that point.

The company's distinguishing choice is to publish much of its frontier work under open weights. Mistral 3, released on 2 December 2025, put Mistral Large 3 - a sparse mixture-of-experts model with 675 billion total and 41 billion active parameters - and the smaller Ministral 3 family (3B, 8B and 14B) out under the Apache 2.0 licence, distributed through Mistral AI Studio, Amazon Bedrock, Azure Foundry and Hugging Face. That open base feeds a commercial funnel: paid API tiers, enterprise deployments on customer hardware, the Vibe assistant (formerly Le Chat), and specialist models for OCR, vision, audio and code.

Revenue is built on regulated European industry rather than consumer scale. Named customers and partners include ASML, Airbus, BMW, Stellantis, CMA CGM, HSBC, BNP Paribas, SAP and IBM. In May 2026 Mistral signed a five-year partnership with Airbus covering defence, space and helicopter work, and agreed with BMW to build models that understand vehicle physics for crash-test optimisation. TechCrunch reported in February 2026 that annualised recurring revenue had reached about $400 million, and the company has said publicly that it is aiming past $1 billion for 2026.

Mistral is also buying its own compute. It raised $830 million of debt in March 2026 for an NVIDIA-powered data centre at Bruyeres-le-Chatel south of Paris, expected online in the second quarter of 2026, alongside a $1.4 billion commitment in Sweden and a target of 200 megawatts of European capacity by 2027. In July 2026 Microsoft signed a multibillion-dollar agreement to expand that European infrastructure and to distribute Mistral models across Foundry, Copilot Studio and Azure.

The company remains private and majority-influenced by European holders. ASML led the September 2025 Series C with 1.3 billion euros of the 1.7 billion euro round, taking an 11% stake and the position of largest shareholder, at a post-money valuation of 11.7 billion euros (about $13.8 billion). Bloomberg reported in June 2026 that Mistral was in early talks to raise about 3 billion euros at roughly a 20 billion euro valuation; that round had not been confirmed as closed at the time of writing.
