Overview
Mobile Premier League (MPL) is a Bangalore-based gaming platform founded in 2018 by Sai Srinivas Kiran, who serves as co-founder and chief executive. Rather than developing its own titles, MPL built a distribution and publishing platform that hosts dozens of third-party mobile games spanning fantasy sports, card games, puzzle titles, and esports tournaments, letting outside game publishers reach users through MPL's app.
The company grew quickly in India's mobile gaming boom, at one point becoming the fastest app in the country to reach a million daily active users, and expanded internationally with offices beyond India. It also explored a web3 pivot in 2022, discussing a potential investment from crypto exchange FTX as part of plans to launch play-to-earn and NFT-based games.
MPL's business, like much of India's real-money gaming sector, was hit hard by a 2023 Indian tax change that applied a 28% goods and services tax to real-money online gaming, which the company said sharply increased its tax burden and forced a roughly 50% workforce reduction. MPL's own app has since displayed notices that deposits and cash games are no longer available in compliance with subsequent legal requirements, while the platform continues to operate other games.
