Overview
MTN Group Fintech is the pan-African mobile financial services business built around MTN Group's MoMo (Mobile Money) platform. It was carved out of MTN's individual telecom operating companies (Nigeria, Ghana, Uganda and others) into dedicated in-country fintech entities under a Group Fintech holding structure, so that outside investors could hold equity in the financial-services business specifically, separate from MTN Group's own publicly traded telecom shares.
The platform offers mobile wallets, person-to-person and merchant payments, international remittances, savings, and access to micro-lending and micro-insurance products, primarily reaching customers who are otherwise underserved by traditional banks across roughly a dozen African markets.
In August 2023, MTN Group announced plans to sell up to a 30% stake in the fintech business to outside investors; Mastercard's $200 million investment for an approximate 3.8% stake, which closed in February 2024, valued the fintech business at $5.2 billion on a cash- and debt-free basis and was the first concrete step in that plan.
Since then, MTN has been executing country-by-country spinoffs of the mobile money units into standalone fintech entities (completed in Ghana in 2026, approved by shareholders in Uganda in 2025 and in Nigeria in 2026), each structured with a minority shareholder trust and an intended future local stock exchange listing within roughly three to five years.
