Overview

Notion is a San Francisco-based productivity software company that builds an all-in-one workspace combining notes, documents, wikis, project management, and databases into a single customizable platform. The company describes its goal as reviving the vision of early computing pioneers to build tools that amplify imagination and augment human intellect, rather than the fragmented, duct-taped workflows of email, spreadsheets, and scattered apps that dominate most workplaces.

Notion was founded in 2013 by Ivan Zhao and Simon Last. The company's early years were difficult: after its original app-building tool for non-coders failed to gain traction, the founders relocated to Kyoto, Japan in 2015 to cut costs and rewrote the product from scratch, sustained in part by a $150,000 loan from Zhao's mother. Notion 1.0 launched in 2016 and the company has since scaled to millions of users, including enterprise customers such as OpenAI, Figma, and Toyota.

The company has expanded its product line through acquisitions, including the Cron calendar app in 2022, which became the basis for the standalone Notion Calendar app launched in January 2024, and the privacy-focused platform Skiff in February 2024. Notion launched Notion AI to all users in February 2023 and has continued to build out AI agent capabilities, with more than 50% of its ARR now coming from AI-enabled customers as of late 2025.

Notion crossed $500 million in annualized revenue in September 2025, and in January 2026 completed a $270 million private tender offer led by returning investors Sequoia Capital and Index Ventures alongside new investor GIC, valuing the company at $11 billion. Notion has not filed a public S-1 registration statement as of this profile; press reports in late 2025 indicated the company could consider an IPO as early as the end of 2026.
