Overview

Nuro is a Mountain View, California autonomous-driving technology company founded in 2016 by Jiajun Zhu and Dave Ferguson, both former engineers on Google's self-driving car project (later Waymo). The company originally built and operated its own fleet of low-speed, driverless delivery robots, but in September 2024 it pivoted away from vertical integration to licensing its self-driving software stack, called the Nuro Driver, as a Level 4 autonomy platform for automakers, ride-hailing companies, and commercial fleet operators.

Its most visible deployment today is a robotaxi program developed jointly with Lucid Group and Uber: the Nuro Driver is being integrated into the Lucid Gravity SUV to launch an Uber-branded robotaxi service, with San Francisco Bay Area and Houston named as the first two markets and on-road autonomous testing underway. Nuro has also formed a technology partnership with NVIDIA, building its next-generation autonomy computer on the NVIDIA DRIVE Thor platform.

As of its most recent disclosed funding round in 2025, Nuro was valued at $6 billion and had raised more than $2.3 billion in total funding across five priced rounds since its 2018 Series A.
