Overview
OKX is a privately held cryptocurrency exchange and Web3 technology company that traces its roots to Okcoin, founded in Beijing in 2013 by Star Xu. The business relaunched internationally as OKEx from Hong Kong in 2017 and adopted the OKX name in January 2022.
OKX operates through OK Group, the holding structure Star Xu founded, which also encompasses OKCoin. The exchange's operating entity for the platform's daily-use terms is Seychelles-registered Aux Cayes Fintech Co. Ltd., and OKX also incorporated a French subsidiary in April 2023.
In February 2025, OKX's operating entity pleaded guilty to operating an unlicensed money-transmitting business in the United States and agreed to pay approximately $505 million in penalties and forfeited fees. OKX relaunched US operations in April 2025 through a newly FinCEN-registered entity, relocating its regional headquarters to San Jose, California, and naming Roshan Robert as US CEO.
In March 2026, Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), the NYSE's publicly traded parent company, announced a strategic minority equity investment in OKX at a $25 billion valuation, taking a seat on OKX's board as part of a broader commercial partnership on tokenized securities and crypto derivatives pricing. OKX leadership has said the company will not pursue a public listing until it is confident it can deliver shareholder returns.
