Overview

Founded in December 2017 by Devin Finzer and Alex Atallah, OpenSea built the first and largest platform for buying, selling and discovering non-fungible tokens, supporting fixed-price sales and auctions for digital art, collectibles, gaming items and domain names across Ethereum and other chains.

The company rode the 2021 NFT boom from a niche crypto project to a $13.3 billion valuation in January 2022, backed by Andreessen Horowitz, Paradigm and Coatue Management. When NFT trading volumes collapsed in 2022 and 2023, OpenSea cut its headcount twice — 20% in mid-2022 and roughly half in late 2023 — and investors including Tiger Global and Coatue marked down their stakes sharply.

In 2025 the company rebuilt its product around a new platform called OS2, expanding from pure NFT trading into token swaps and cross-chain asset trading, acquired the mobile wallet startup Rally to bring on a new CTO, and closed out a two-year SEC investigation into whether its operations amounted to an unregistered securities exchange without any enforcement action.

OpenSea had planned to launch a token called SEA in the first quarter of 2026, with half of the token supply allocated to the community and half of platform revenue directed to token buybacks, but delayed that launch on March 16, 2026 with no new date given
