Overview
Founded in May 2013 by musician Jack Conte and developer Sam Yam, Patreon grew out of Conte's own frustration trying to monetize his YouTube music videos through ad revenue alone. The San Francisco-based company built a subscription tool that lets fans pledge recurring monthly or per-creation payments in exchange for exclusive content, community access, and other perks.
Patreon has raised roughly $412 million in venture funding across seven disclosed rounds since 2013, reaching a reported $4 billion valuation after its April 2021 Series F. The company remains privately held, with Jack Conte continuing to serve as CEO alongside co-founder Sam Yam as President and Chief Technology Officer.
Through 2025 and 2026 Patreon has positioned itself publicly against unlicensed use of creator content by AI model developers, blocking AI training crawlers at the network level via a partnership with Cloudflare, while also working through a cost restructuring that included a 2026 workforce reduction.
Private securities are speculative, illiquid, and involve risk of complete loss of principal. You should be prepared to hold private securities for an extended period; there is no assurance of a secondary market, an IPO, or other liquidity event. You are fully responsible for conducting your own due diligence. Pricing is indicative — nothing here is an offer of securities.
