Overview
Personio is a Munich, Germany-based provider of cloud HR software for small and medium-sized businesses, covering core HR processes such as employee data management, recruiting, time tracking and payroll from a single platform. The company was founded in 2015 by Hanno Renner, Ignaz Forstmeier, Roman Schumacher and Arseniy Vershinin, who met while studying at Munich's Center for Digital Technology and Management.
Personio raised capital across six disclosed rounds between 2017 and 2022, moving from a $12 million Series A led by Northzone to a $200 million second closing of its Series E in June 2022 that valued the company at $8.5 billion, led by existing investor Greenoaks Capital Partners. Other backers across the rounds include Index Ventures, Accel, Meritech, Lightspeed Venture Partners, Global Founders Capital, Picus Capital, Altimeter Capital and Alkeon.
In May 2022 Personio acquired the Berlin-based employee experience platform Back to expand its people-process automation and open new European offices. Its executive team has since been substantially refreshed: Alex Grant and Stephan Micklitz joined as Chief Product Officer and Chief Technology Officer in October 2025, Tu Nguyen joined as Chief Financial Officer in September 2025, Philipp Richter became Chief People Officer in mid-2026, and Philip Lacor joined as Chief Revenue Officer in October 2024, succeeding Geraldine MacCarthy, who has since become CRO at Oyster. The company's board added Cloudflare CFO Thomas Seifert in December 2025 and AI leaders Judith Dada and Darragh Curran in June 2026, following Personio's own statement that it had reached profitability in the first quarter of 2026.
