About

Physical Intelligence (stylized π and often called "Pi") is a San Francisco robotics AI startup founded in early 2024 by a team of former Google DeepMind and Stanford/UC Berkeley researchers, building general-purpose vision-language-action foundation models intended to let a single AI system control many different kinds of robots across many different tasks, rather than requiring a separately engineered system for each robot and task.

Overview

Physical Intelligence (also styled π, pronounced "pi") is a San Francisco-based robotics AI startup founded in early 2024 by Karol Hausman, Sergey Levine, Chelsea Finn, Brian Ichter, Lachy Groom, Adnan Esmail and Quan Vuong. The company builds general-purpose vision-language-action (VLA) foundation models — described by founders as an attempt to bring ChatGPT-style scaling to robotics — that can be applied across many different robot hardware platforms and tasks, from folding laundry to bussing tables and assembling boxes, rather than building single-purpose robots. Its model lineage — π0 (released October 2024), π0.5 (shipped April 2025), and π0.7 (published April 2026) — is positioned as generalist policies that transfer learned behavior across robot embodiments and into new, unseen environments. Physical Intelligence raised a $70 million seed round in March 2024 (roughly $400 million valuation), a $400 million Series A in November 2024 at a $2.4 billion valuation backed by Jeff Bezos and OpenAI, a $600 million Series B in November 2025 led by CapitalG at a $5.6 billion valuation, and a Series C led by Founders Fund that closed in May 2026 at an $11.19 billion valuation, per aggregator data (no primary press release confirming the Series C close was found).
