About

PingCAP was founded in 2015 in Beijing by Max Liu, Dongxu Huang and Qiu Cui, engineers who set out to build a distributed SQL database that could combine the horizontal scalability and fault tolerance of NoSQL systems with the transactional guarantees and MySQL compatibility that enterprises already relied on. The company's flagship product, TiDB, reached its first general-availability release in October 2017 and has since grown into a widely adopted open-source project, complemented by the TiKV row-oriented storage engine (a CNCF Graduated project) and the TiFlash columnar storage engine for real-time analytics.

Overview

PingCAP is a database infrastructure company founded in 2015 in Beijing by Max Liu, Dongxu Huang (Ed Huang) and Qiu Cui, three infrastructure engineers who had previously collaborated on Redis-related work together. The company is best known for TiDB, an open-source, MySQL-compatible distributed SQL database designed to handle hybrid transactional and analytical processing (HTAP) at scale, along with related storage-engine projects TiKV and TiFlash and the managed TiDB Cloud service.

PingCAP has raised a total of roughly $341.6 million in disclosed equity funding across five rounds, from an early 2015 round through a $270 million Series D round that closed in November 2020. That Series D round was later reported, as it continued to close with additional investors led by Sequoia Capital and GIC through July 2021, to have pushed PingCAP's valuation above $3 billion. GetLatka estimated PingCAP's annual recurring revenue at roughly $13.1 million as of 2024, up from about $10.3 million in 2023, with headcount of about 430 employees as of December 2024.

PingCAP is headquartered in Sunnyvale, California, with additional offices including in Beijing, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Tokyo. Max Liu remains Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer and Dongxu Huang remains Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer as of 2025-2026. As of September 2026, PingCAP is a private company that has not filed to go public, is not known to be in bankruptcy or reorganization, and is not wholly consolidated into any already-public parent.
