Overview
Prometheus (launched as Project Prometheus) is a San Francisco-based artificial intelligence startup co-founded in November 2025 by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Vik Bajaj, a chemist and physicist who previously co-founded Alphabet's Verily life-sciences unit and later co-founded Foresite Labs. Bezos and Bajaj serve as co-CEOs, with Bezos focused on business direction and growth strategy and Bajaj driving scientific vision and large-model engineering.
The company describes its mission as "AI for the physical economy": building what Bezos calls an "artificial general engineer," AI systems meant to compress the design-build-test cycle for physical products such as jet engines, chips, vehicles, and drug compounds by learning from real-world experimental and engineering data rather than only from text and code.
Prometheus launched with roughly $6.2 billion in funding in November 2025 at a reported post-money valuation of about $30 billion, and closed a $12 billion Series B in June 2026 at a post-money valuation of roughly $41 billion, backed by JPMorgan Chase, BlackRock, Goldman Sachs, DST Global, Arch Venture Partners, and Bezos himself. In November 2025 the company also acquired agentic-computing startup General Agents, maker of the "Ace" computer-control agent.
As of mid-2026 Prometheus employed roughly 150 people across offices in San Francisco, London, and Zurich, with researchers recruited from OpenAI, xAI, Meta, and DeepMind. The company remains private with no IPO timeline; Bezos has said it is "too early to think about that."
