Overview

Grafana Labs is the company behind Grafana, the open-source observability and data visualization platform that grew out of a side project by Swedish developer Torkel Ödegaard while he was working at Orbitz. Ödegaard released Grafana in January 2014, and later that year he co-founded the company, originally named Raintank, with Raj Dutt and Anthony Woods to build a commercial business around it. Grafana Labs now maintains the broader "LGTM" open observability stack -- Loki for logs, Grafana for dashboards, Tempo for traces, and Mimir for metrics -- alongside Grafana Cloud, its fully managed SaaS offering, and Grafana Enterprise for self-managed deployments. The platform lets teams pull metrics, logs, and traces from dozens of data sources into a single set of dashboards rather than being locked into one vendor's stack, an approach the company calls "composable" or "open" observability. Grafana Labs is a fully remote company, with its three co-founders based on three different continents at founding, and is headquartered in New York. By 2026 the company said its open-source Grafana software had more than 25 million users worldwide and that more than 7,000 paying organizations -- including Bloomberg, NVIDIA, Salesforce, Microsoft, and Anthropic -- relied on its commercial products, with annual recurring revenue surpassing $400 million.
