Overview
Recursive Superintelligence (commonly "Recursive") emerged from stealth in May 2026 with $650 million in funding at a $4.65 billion post-money valuation, one of the largest seed-stage-style raises disclosed by an AI research startup founded outside the existing frontier-lab tier.
The company was founded in 2025 by Richard Socher, former chief scientist at Salesforce and founder of You.com, who serves as CEO, alongside seven co-founders drawn from OpenAI, Google DeepMind, Meta AI, and Salesforce AI Research. Its stated goal is recursive self-improvement: AI systems that identify their own weaknesses and redesign themselves with less direct human supervision, beginning with automating AI research before expanding toward physics, chemistry, and pre-clinical biology.
In July 2026, Recursive signed a multi-year, $410 million cloud collaboration agreement with Amazon Web Services to run its automated research systems at scale -- its first major disclosed infrastructure commitment following the funding announcement.
