Overview

Remote is a global human resources platform that lets companies hire, pay, and manage employees and contractors in other countries without setting up a local legal entity. It provides Employer of Record and Contractor of Record services, global payroll, benefits administration, equity management, and compliance support, and the company says it owns and operates its own in-country legal entities rather than reselling a local partner network. It was founded in 2019 by Job van der Voort, previously VP of Product at GitLab, and Marcelo Lebre, previously VP of Engineering at Unbabel, and operates as a fully distributed company headquartered in San Francisco with no central office.

Remote raised four disclosed equity rounds between 2020 and 2022 — an $11 million seed round, a $35 million Series A led by Index Ventures, a $150 million Series B led by Accel that made it a unicorn at a valuation above $1 billion, and a $300 million Series C led by SoftBank Vision Fund 2 that valued the company at roughly $3 billion — for total disclosed funding of about $496 million. It has not disclosed a new priced equity round since April 2022, though a June 2023 report citing Crunchbase data described the company's valuation as still around $3 billion.

The company cut about 10% of its staff in July 2022 amid a broader pullback in technology hiring, but continued to expand its product line afterward: it launched a global HR platform with HRIS capabilities and a Remote Talent job board in 2023, struck a revenue-sharing partnership with domestic payroll company Gusto in June 2023 to refer Gusto customers hiring internationally, made its first acquisition by buying equity-management startup Easop in April 2024, and had its Employer of Record product certified as a Workday integration in August 2026. Its customers include Anthropic, GitLab, DoorDash, Box, and Miro.
