Snapdeal

About

Snapdeal operates a digital platform connecting several hundred thousand third-party sellers with buyers across thousands of Indian towns and cities. Per the company's own account, over 80% of its orders originate outside India's largest metro markets, reflecting a deliberate focus on value-conscious consumers in smaller cities rather than competing head-on with Amazon and Flipkart in premium, metro-centric e-commerce.

Overview

Snapdeal is an Indian e-commerce platform headquartered in New Delhi, founded on 4 February 2010 by Kunal Bahl and Rohit Bansal. It began as a daily-deals site before pivoting to a full online platform model in late 2011, and today operates as one of India's top online marketplaces focused on value-conscious shoppers in smaller towns and cities.

After a widely reported attempt to merge with rival Flipkart collapsed in mid-2017 amid disagreement among Snapdeal's board and investors, the company executed a turnaround plan known internally as 'Snapdeal 2.0': it divested non-core units (including Freecharge and Vulcan Express) and refocused entirely on its core value-platform business, cutting losses sharply over the following years.

In July 2022, Snapdeal's founders formalized a holding structure called AceVector Group, unifying Snapdeal with two sibling businesses grown out of the same founding team: Unicommerce, a SaaS order-management platform Snapdeal had acquired in 2015, and Stellaro Brands, a consumer ethnicwear house. Snapdeal itself remains an independent, privately held company; Unicommerce was separately listed on Indian stock exchanges in August 2024, but that IPO applied to Unicommerce as its own distinct listed entity, not to Snapdeal.
