Overview

Starling was founded in 2014 by Anne Boden, a former Allied Irish Banks executive, as a mobile-only challenger bank built on its own cloud-native core banking platform rather than licensed legacy infrastructure.

The bank holds a full UK banking licence and has grown into one of the country's largest digital-only banks, serving personal, business and joint account holders alongside a growing Banking-as-a-Service arm, Engine by Starling, that licenses its core technology to other banks.

In September 2025, the group refreshed its brand identity, shortening its public-facing name from "Starling Bank" to "Starling" while the underlying regulated entity, Starling Bank Limited, is unchanged.
