Overview
Strava is an American fitness-tracking platform that uses GPS data to monitor physical activity, layered with social-networking features that let athletes follow, compare, and comment on each other's workouts. It was founded in 2009 by Mark Gainey and Michael Horvath, alongside Davis Kitchel, Chris Donahue, Mark Shaw, and Pelle Sommansson, and grew out of the founders' own experience training as competitive rowers and cyclists. The platform supports GPS tracking for running, cycling, and dozens of other activity types through a freemium subscription model, with a paid tier adding features like advanced performance analytics, route planning, and safety tools. Strava has expanded through acquisitions, including the 3D outdoor-mapping platform Fatmap in January 2023, and, per Wikipedia, the running app Runna and cycling app Breakaway in May 2025.
Strava has been through several changes in top leadership since its founding: co-founder Mark Gainey served as the first CEO, followed by co-founder Michael Horvath (2010-2013, and again from November 2019 until his February 2023 departure), with James Quarles leading the company in between (2017-2019). Former YouTube shopping-unit general manager Michael Martin was named Strava's new CEO effective January 2024, after Horvath's second departure prompted a public search for a successor.
