Overview
Stripe describes itself as “a technology company that builds economic infrastructure for the internet.” Businesses from startups to public companies use it to accept payments and run their operations online, across more than 135 payment methods and more than 50 countries. Around the payments engine sits a software suite spanning Billing and Invoicing, Tax, Radar for fraud, Terminal for in-person payments, Capital, Treasury and Atlas.
Payments are priced per transaction with no setup, monthly or hidden fees — 1.5% plus €0.25 for domestic European cards, 3.15% plus €0.25 for international ones. The software products are sold separately on subscription or usage terms, with Billing from €500 a year or 0.7% of billing volume. Stripe said its Revenue suite was on track to reach a $1 billion annual run rate, and that it remained highly profitable.
Businesses on Stripe generated $1.9 trillion in total volume in 2025, up 34% and equal to roughly 1.6% of global GDP. More than five million businesses use Stripe directly or via platforms, including 90% of the Dow Jones Industrial Average and 80% of the Nasdaq 100. Forrester named it a Leader in its Q1 2026 Merchant Payment Providers Wave, and Gartner has named it a Leader in recurring billing three years running.
Recent growth has been built on AI commerce and stablecoins. Stripe closed its acquisition of the stablecoin company Bridge in February 2025, saw stablecoin volume double to about $400 billion, and co-incubated the payments blockchain Tempo with Paradigm, live since March 2026. The Agentic Commerce Protocol it published with OpenAI now powers checkout in ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot and Facebook, and Stripe bought Metronome in January 2026 and agreed to acquire OpenRouter in August 2026.
