Overview

SumUp is a London-headquartered financial technology company that helps small and micro businesses accept card payments and run their operations, through card readers, point-of-sale hardware, an online store, invoicing tools, and a business account. It was founded in 2012 by Daniel Klein, Marc-Alexander Christ, Jan Deepen, and Stefan Jeschonnek, growing out of the founders' earlier mobile-payments venture Payleven, and now serves more than 4 million merchants across roughly 36 markets spanning Europe, Latin America, and beyond.

The company has been companywide EBITDA-positive since the fourth quarter of 2022 and has raised over $4 billion in combined equity and debt financing since its founding. Its capital raises have come from a mix of growth-equity investors (Bain Capital Tech Opportunities, Sixth Street Growth) and private-credit lenders (Goldman Sachs, Apollo, AllianceBernstein, BlackRock, Temasek, Oaktree, and others), reflecting a financing strategy that has relied heavily on debt alongside relatively limited equity dilution.

SumUp's most recent disclosed capital raise was a $1.6 billion (€1.5 billion) private credit financing led by Goldman Sachs in May 2024, one of the largest European private-credit transactions of its kind at the time, used in part to refinance existing debt and fund continued expansion.

The company remains privately held as of September 2026, but in September 2025 reports emerged that SumUp was targeting a 2026 IPO at a valuation of up to roughly £15 billion, and by April 2026 the company had engaged investment banks including Deutsche Bank, Goldman Sachs, Jefferies, and JPMorgan (with STJ Advisors as financial adviser) to prepare for a potential London listing, with a discussed valuation of $10 billion or more. Co-founder Daniel Klein continues to serve as Group CEO, with fellow co-founder Marc-Alexander Christ as COO and Hermione McKee as CFO.
